JAMAICA—New York City has experienced high levels of unemployment and foreclosure rates and dwindling consumer spending--local small business have been forced to reinvent themselves in the wake of the recession.

On Saturday, October 3, New York City businesses demonstrated how they have reshaped their business models in order to meet the current economic challenges at the FastTrac NYC Business Expo.

FastTrac is a training program to help emerging entrepreneurs, including those displaced from the financial services sector, start new businesses and help existing entrepreneurial business owners run their businesses. Mayor Bloomberg endorsed the FastTrac program stating, “New York City’s workforce is the hardest-working and most talented in the nation, and that’s an asset we cannot afford to squander.”

In collaboration with the New York City Department of Small Business Services, The Levin Institute and the Kauffman Foundation, a philanthropic organization that works to advance entrepreneurship around the world, the FastTrac programs are designed to help entrepreneurs determine the viability of their business concepts and increase the number of entrepreneurs who will not only create new jobs, but can also capitalize on new opportunities.
