Go Deep or Go Wide?
PAUL TAGLIABUE
We heard a lot of very important comments here today from Jerry Hultin and others about areas where New York can be better, where its industry can be deeper, where it can be diversified, where the academic institutions can be deeper and more diversified.
But as you go wide in this environment, you better understand there are lots of people going deep in that area, whatever that area is. I'm sure in his business he's got firms competing with him that didn't know what public relations or communications were in those nations 20 years ago. And now they're doing a better job or as good as job as we will do.
So, yes, it's great to be ambitious, to go wide, but understand you need to go deep at the same time in all those spaces where you're going wide, because someone else will be going deep. And that takes a very big pocket.
You've either got to have a lot of good private financing ideas or you've got to be willing to have a tax system that's fair and balanced but that also puts resources in the hands of public officials who can spend them efficiently.
